By attending Startup Weekend Evansville 3.0, you will expand your entrepreneurial mindset.

The environment during a Startup Weekend is one of openness, collaboration, and education. It embodies the paradigm shift taking place in our education system today by emphasizing the power of collaborative, hands-on learning utilizing real problems and scenarios. All ideas are welcome and decisions are made democratically. No idea is considered unworthy and any team with passion and vision is encouraged to continue working after the weekend, regardless of judges’ feedback.

You will be immersed in autonomy - independent action by yourself or team aimed at bringing forth a business concept or vision and carrying it through to completion. Can you ‘pan out’ to see a compelling big vision for your business idea, then ‘zoom in’ and focus on near-term startup goals? Successful entrepreneurs can facilely move back and forth between these two views. They’re able to articulate the big picture, while simultaneously managing and executing to the ‘zoom-in’ picture.

Whether you’re a born extrovert or introvert, you’ll find yourself always selling. You’ll be selling your vision to prospective partners and funding sources. You’ll be selling prospective recruits on why they should join this startup they’ve never heard of.

Startup Weekend helps harness the raw power of creativity and human potential by empowering individuals and teams to build and validate the solutions to the opportunities and problems they see and feel every day. Through Startup Weekend people are able to pursue their passions and find the people they need to transform their vision into reality, while providing opportunities to learn how to succeed not only on a local level, but with the ability and potential to become a high-growth venture.

You will engage with creative, like-minded individuals by immersing in organic team development; you will capture the advantages of diversity. Idea variability depends on individuals whose views don't cluster around the mean. Play your part of enabling a large community of passion. Passion is a multiplier of human effort, but it can't be manufactured. It's present only when people get the chance to work on what they truly care about.

Whether you found a company, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn new skills far outside your comfort zone of thought and action, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Steve Blank is a Silicon Valley serial-entrepreneur and academician.
Blank is recognized for developing the Customer Development methodology, which launched the Lean Startup movement.

Blank has spent over thirty years within the high technology industry. He has founded or worked within eight startup companies, four of which have gone public.

Blank's Google Tech talk, The Secret History of Silicon Valley, offers a widely regarded insider's perspective on the emerging Silicon Valley's start-up innovation.

Blank has published three books: The Four Steps to the Epiphany, Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost and The Startup Owner's Manual.

Nick Tippmann


Nick Tippmann went to his first startup weekend a little over a year ago in November 2011.

In the past year he has accomplished some amazing things, throwing a Shark Tank watching party with Mark Cuban with only 8 hours notice, being invited to be the Social Media Coordinator for DEMO 2012, one of the largest Silicon Valley technology and startup conferences, organizing Startup Weekend Bloomington in May 2012, and he was asked to join a startup at the Brandery, a nationally recognized business accelerator.

Most recently he joined the awesome team at, a new media company focused on being, "The Voice of Startups Everywhere Else," as a co-founder.

Drew Peyronnin

Drew Peyronnin is co-owner and executive vice president of Peyronnin Construction Company, Inc., a general construction, mechanical construction and construction management firm operating in the Evansville, IN area since 1947.

Dr. Peyronnin has been an active Angel investor since 2005. In the past seven years he has completed due diligence on over 25 early stage companies and expects to have made eight investments in six companies through 2012. His investment focus is on near revenue Indiana companies in Life Sciences and Information Technologies.

He also is the organizer of the Evansville Tech on Tap meetup and has participated as a mentor, judge and speaker at several Indiana Startup Weekends.

Dr. Peyronnin has served as a board member on numerous non-profit agencies including the YMCA, Easter Seals, Youth First, Student Financial Aid Association, Vanderburgh Community Foundation, Community Foundation Alliance, and Alliance Initiatives. He is the donor adviser of the Charlotte and Leo Peyronnin Family Fund and Peyronnin Construction Company Fund.

Kevin Celuch, Ph.D.

Professor of Marketing

Kevin Celuch is a Professor in the Department of Marketing and Business
Communications and holder of the Blair Chair of Business Science at the University of Southern Indiana. Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., he worked in program evaluation/applied research for the State of New York. His active engagement approach to teaching has been recognized for innovation in business education. He is a presenter on such topics as critical and creative thinking and collaborative learning.

Kevin has been actively involved in marketing communication, market information, customer engagement, and organizational partnering-related research. Kevin also has held Affiliated Faculty/Research Staff status at the Carl Gunnard Johnson Research Center, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, for his work on management issues in the metal processing industries. He has worked with numerous profit and nonprofit organizations.

Jack Smothers, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Management

Jack Smothers, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Southern Indiana. Jack obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi, an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Martin, and a BSBA from Union University. Before working at USI, Jack worked in higher academic administration at Union University. Jack co-owns an HR consulting firm called which provides consulting on HR issues such as selection, promotion, and compensation.

His primary research interests include entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, business history, personnel selection, and business education. Jack has published academic research papers in The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and the Journal of Management History.

Johnathon Marvell

Director of IT Service

Johnathon has 11 years in the United States Army. Currently, he serves in the Indiana Army National Guard as a Rave (Drone) Master Trainer and Pilot.

The majority of Johnathon’s success is from his experience in the Army. Drive, Determination, and Dedication are the values that run EDN SYSTEMS.

Johnathon was a mentor at Startup Weekend 1.0 Weekend and has assisted the launch of five startups.

Doug K. Wurmnest


Doug is an exceptional business advisor with nearly 30 years of financial and operational experience. His goal is to help a business owner meet their objectives by improving cash flow, providing timely and accurate financial reporting, and developing and implementing plans to maximize the value of the business. Doug developed his business insights through diverse roles in the manufacturing, banking, construction, and transportation industries.

Doug is a graduate of Bradley University earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Doug began his accounting career as an auditor at KPMG Peat Marwick and has served as Senior VP for a publicly traded regional bank, CFO for a privately held company, and advisor to numerous other businesses. He is a member of the AICPA and has served on boards of charitable organizations in the Evansville area. Doug and his wife of 30+ years, Paula, are proud parents of three adult children.

Mark A. Harper, Ph.D.

Intellectual Property Attorney

Mark Harper earned his B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering in 1992 from Ohio State University. He also received his Juris Doctor degree from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in 2005. During his studies at Ohio State, Mark was selected as a B.F. Goodrich Young Inventor and issued one patent for his graduate research. Following graduation he was a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

Before returning to school to pursue his law degree, Mark worked as a research engineer in the metals industry where his research interests included high temperature corrosion and alloy development. In addition, he served as principal investigator on two government funded alloy development programs, one involving a large collaboration between two universities and a national laboratory. Mark has over thirty publications and one patent in the material science field.

Mark is a shareholder at Gifford Krass -- an intellectual property law firm -- and his clients range from individuals to start-ups to Fortune 500 companies in a variety of technical fields such a materials, mechanical, chemical and medical devices. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the State Courts of Michigan, and the United States Patent & Trademark Office. His outside interests include his German Shepherd, hiking and golf.

Mark Elliott

South Central Communications

Mark Elliott is a radio programmer and personality with over 30 years of experience in media, marketing and radio programming and brand management. In 1993, Mark became an entrepreneur, using his experience in radio programming to create his own custom marketing agency. Radio One 2 One worked to acquire and retain radio listeners using advanced database and digital techniques to create a bond between the station and the listener.

Radio One 2 One quickly grew to over $1 million in gross billings and expanded to consult real estate agents and other small businesses, growing relationships one customer at a time. Mark sold Radio One 2 One in 2006 to return to day to day radio operations as the Brand Manager and Afternoon Host on WIKY Radio in Evansville. Mark has won national awards for programming, promotion and community service, most recently being named one of the Best Radio Program Directors in America (2012, Radio Ink Magazine).

Mark is also a successful public speaker, trainer and presenter, and carries a secret wish to get back to owning his own company.

Tony Schy

Founder and CEO P-STIM USA

Tony Schy is an active angel investor and advisor to several technology businesses in the Louisville Metropolitan area. In 2001, Tony co-founded Chapman Kelly, Inc., which provided healthcare expense and dependent care auditing services to large corporations, including several Fortune 500 companies.

During his tenure at Chapman Kelly, Tony was responsible for account management, business development, technology, and administrative operations.

In 2010, Chapman Kelly was acquired by HMS Holdings Group. Tony remained with HMS Holdings as Vice-President of Operations to facilitate the transition period for HMS.

During 2011, Tony began investing in both commercial real estate and information technology startup companies in the region.

Prior to Chapman Kelly, Tony spent 10 years with Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) as Director in the Technology and Outsourcing Financial Services Practice.

Shance Sizemore

Program Manager G.A.G.E.

Shance Sizemore is the programs manager with the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville. He works to provide assistance with local and state governmental interactions, business attraction, and technology transfer. Through his work with the Growth Alliance, he also mentors start-up companies and technology based entrepreneurs.

Prior to the Growth Alliance, Shance worked in management for the commercial pharmaceutical industry and as a project coordinator for the golf industry. On sunny days, you will find Shance riding to work on his fixie. If he is not working, he can be found backpacking, kayaking, or repelling.

Shance earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies from the University of Southern Indiana. He has since continued his education by attending master’s courses in organizational communication, training/development, and political communication. He recently completed the Indiana Economic Development Course held at Ball State University.

Dan Arens

Entrepreneurial Advocate

Dan Arens received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University. After graduating from Purdue, Arens worked as a systems and general consultant for seven years.

He went on to help found Keller Schroeder and Associates, Incorporated (KSA), an information technology and consulting firm. After retiring as chairman of KSA, Arens invested in several local start-ups and now works as a business consultant.

Rick Culiver

Prior to joining Lieberman Technologies in 2010, Rick Culiver held positions in technical sales, voice and data solutions management. As an account manager for Southwestern Bell Communications and Matrix Integration, he designed complex solutions and collaborated with clients on a wide array of IT solutions to fit their needs. He has extensive professional experience in providing technical solutions and a strong reputation of quality service.

Rick’s broad technical expertise, with an eye for detail and follow up, make him an excellent solutions advisor and strategist.

Andrew Epperson

Andrew Epperson has over 10 years of experience in designing and developing websites, web-based applications, and Apps for business and personal consumption. He has extensive professional experience in freelance and agency working environments. Andrew skill set focuses on front-end development and user interface design to make technology both usable and efficient. He also works with his clients at Lieberman Technologies to deliver project management and business strategy concepts in the online arena. Throughout his experiences, Andrew has developed specific expertise in WordPress development, Search Engine Optimization and Social Media / Content Marketing.

Andrew is a graduate from the University of Evansville, actively involved in the Social Media Club of Evansville, and is a volunteer web administrator for several community and non-profit organizations.
